A cultural evening meant to celebrate Navratri at the Siddhpeeth Maa Kunjapuri Tourism and Development Fair in Uttarakhand’s Tehri Garhwal district turned into a public controversy on Sunday evening. Punjabi singer Daler Mehndi’s performance was interrupted by Cabinet Minister and Narendra Nagar MLA Subodh Uniyal, who stepped onto the stage and accused the artist of failing to deliver a proper live show.
The incident, captured on video and widely shared, has sparked debate about artist accountability, public respect for performers, and the responsibilities of event organisers. Uniyal later clarified his position, while Daler Mehndi’s brother Mika Singh and industry bodies demanded an apology and greater sensitivity.
What Happened on Stage During the Navratri Event
During the cultural programme organised as part of the historic fair, Uniyal walked onto the stage while Daler Mehndi was performing. The minister expressed strong displeasure, stating that the event was dedicated to Goddess Durga during Navratri and that the performance did not meet expected standards.
Uniyal questioned whether Mehndi was singing live or relying on a pre-recorded track. He alleged that the singer appeared unable to stand or speak properly and suggested he might be under the influence of a substance. The minister told the artist that organisers had paid a substantial amount for the performance and that the audience deserved better entertainment.
Mehndi was seen requesting the minister to leave the stage. The confrontation created an awkward moment in front of the audience and quickly went viral on social media the following day.
Minister’s Explanation and the Rs 35 Lakh Payment Claim
In subsequent statements, Uniyal defended his actions. He said he felt pressure from people at the event to question the performance because it appeared the singer was only lip-syncing and struggling physically. The minister claimed organisers had paid Rs 35 lakh in advance to the artist, along with covering hotel bookings.
Uniyal maintained he had nothing personal against Mehndi and no intention to hurt him. He stressed that a big-name artist should uphold the dignity of the stage, especially at a religious occasion. He later said he learned only after the interruption that Mehndi was unwell and unable to speak properly due to health reasons.
The Comparison with Another Singer’s Cancellation
Uniyal pointed to another artist’s example to support his view. He stated that singer Sunanda Sharma had been invited for the same event but cancelled due to illness and refunded the full amount paid to her. When Sharma could not perform, the team approached Daler Mehndi.
The minister argued that if Mehndi was unwell, he should have informed the organisers in advance and declined the show rather than appearing in a condition that left the audience disappointed. He noted that the public are not medical experts and cannot be expected to understand an artist’s health issues without prior information.

Family and Industry Response
Daler Mehndi’s younger brother, singer Mika Singh, strongly defended him. Mika stated that his brother does not consume alcohol and challenged anyone to prove otherwise. He described the public reprimand as an insult to an artist of such stature and demanded an apology from the minister.
Mika also questioned the Rs 35 lakh payment claim and asked Uniyal to make the receipts public so that people could know whether the amount was paid in cash or by cheque. He appealed to Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami to intervene, warning that disrespect toward artists could discourage future performances in the state.
Several other singers and members of the music industry expressed support for Mehndi. Reports indicated that the singer had recently undergone surgery, which may have affected his ability to perform at full capacity. The Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to look into the matter, highlighting concerns about how artists are treated in public forums.
Chief Minister’s Intervention and Broader Debate
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami responded by saying he would speak to both Daler Mehndi and Mika Singh about the controversy. The statement aimed to defuse tensions while the discussion continued in public.
The episode has raised larger questions. On one side is the expectation that artists deliver value for the substantial fees they receive and maintain professional standards, especially at government-supported cultural and religious events. On the other is the concern that publicly confronting and accusing an artist of intoxication on stage without medical verification undermines dignity and sets a poor precedent.
Supporters of the minister argue that organisers and local representatives have a duty to ensure quality for the audience who turn up for such programmes. Critics of the intervention say private communication would have been more appropriate than a mid-performance confrontation, particularly when health issues were later acknowledged.
Accountability and Mutual Respect
The controversy highlights the need for clearer communication between artists and organisers. Advance disclosure of health limitations could prevent situations where both the performer and the audience feel short-changed. At the same time, public figures handling such matters on stage must balance accountability with respect.
Daler Mehndi remains a well-known name in Indian music with a long career spanning Punjabi pop and Sufi styles. The incident at the Kunjapuri Fair has placed both the artist’s professional commitments and the manner of public criticism under scrutiny. As statements continue from both sides, the focus remains on ensuring that cultural events uphold standards while treating performers with the dignity their craft deserves.
